Overview of Independence College of Cosmetology

Since 1960, Independence College of Cosmetology has earned a national and international reputation for quality cosmetology education. The school was founded by Don and Leila Cohoon, and is now directed by their daughter, Linda Clifford. Three certificate programs are offered in Esthetics, Basic Cosmetology, and Instructor Training. The college is located in the Greater Kansas City area in Independence, Missouri, and has been an active part of the local business community and strives to meet the needs and desires of beauty salons in the local area.

Independence College of Cosmetology uses the Pivot Point International training as the basis of the hairdressing curriculum, and the CIDESCO training curriculum for the Esthetics program, to meet all international requirements so that students can surpass basic licensure and work worldwide. The College is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the national accrediting agency for cosmetology schools.

Areas of Study

Independence College of Cosmetology offers three training programs, with the option of attending full-time or part-time, with all classes held during the weekdays and Saturdays. The Basic Cosmetology program is based on the Pivot Point training system, teaching students to perform any standard cosmetology service required in a beauty salon such as hairstyling, coloring, nail technician, and salon manager or owner. The Esthetics program is a complete basic course in the scientific method of skin care for the entire body, and upon completion of the program students are eligible to take a special exam to earn a CIDESCO diploma, the world's most prestigious beauty qualification. The Instructor Training program prepares students to be able to teach any phase of cosmetology in schools including lesson planning, teaching principals, psychology, motivation, classroom training and practice teaching.

Independence College of Cosmetology Selectivity

Independence College of Cosmetology offers open admission to students who meet basic qualifications. Students must have a high school diploma or GED certificate, have attained the age of 17 prior to taking the State Board Exam, be free of contagious disease, possess good moral character, and have a personal interview with a school official and pass an entrance exam. Students can begin the application process by completing an online application.
