Overview of Johnson & Wales University
Founded in 1914 in Providence, Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University (JWU) began as a business school and later evolved into a junior college before eventually acquiring university status. With a strong foundation in specialized business education, the University gradually expanded its scope and soon became internationally recognized for the quality and variety of its programs. In 1973, JWU introduced a new career emphasis with the opening of its now-renowned College of Culinary Arts. In 1993, JWU became the first school in the country to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in the Culinary Arts.
This program was supplemented four years later by a Bachelor of Science degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. Since that time, JWU's College of Culinary Arts has grown to become the world's largest food service educator. The University today has expanded to a total of four campuses. In addition to the original Providence site, JWU has campus locations in Charlotte, North Carolina; Denver, Colorado; and North Miami, Florida.
