Kean University was formerly known as the Kean College of New Jersey and was established in 1855. This large liberal arts state university occupies 150 acres of land. The university is recognized for its physical therapy and education programs. It has 7 colleges under it:

The university's official colors are white, baby blue and navy blue, and the mascot is the Cougar. Men's and women's sports include basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer and outdoor track & field. Petter Villegas, soccer player; Devon Storm, professional wrestler; and Bruce Williams, an American businessman, are among the famous alumni of the university.
Union, NJ is home to Kean. Union is a small city. The school is a public institution. Degrees at Kean go up to the Doctoral degree.

Prospective students are advised that admissions are not open to all; the school selects from among qualified applicants. Three quarters of students in 2007-2008 had SAT verbal scores of at least 400. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 410 and 520.
