Marylhurst University was established by Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1893. It was then known as the St. Mary's Academy and College. It was renamed the Marylhurst College in 1930, and received its present name in the year 1998. Marylhurst University awards a large number of bachelor's, and master's degrees to the students.
