Marylhurst University was established by Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1893. It was then known as the St. Mary's Academy and College. It was renamed the Marylhurst College in 1930, and received its present name in the year 1998. Marylhurst University awards a large number of bachelor's, and master's degrees to the students. The university also offers certificate programs in various fields of study.

The students of Marylhurst University are associated with clubs and organizations including the Marylhurst Gerontology Association, Marylhurst Music Therapy Student Organization, Marylhurst Labyrinth Group, Marylhurst Writers' Club, Marylhurst S.A.F.E. Community, and Marylhurst Sweep Rowing Club. The Alumni Association of the Marylhurst University publishes a monthly newsletter.
