Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a public, co-educational state college. It is located on Taylors Point in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The academy is commonly referred to as Mass Maritime, Maritime or MMA. MMA was established on June 1, 1981 by an act of the state legislature. It was initially known as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School. MMA offers professional study programs, undergraduate and graduate degrees in maritime related fields. Marine engineering, emergency management, marine safety and environmental protection and international maritime business are some of the subjects offered at the academy.
MMA is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III. The athletic teams of the academy are nicknamed the Buccaneers. The sports teams participate in sports like rifle, cross country, crew, softball, track and field, sailing, lacrosse and soccer. Financial aid is given to students who are in need of assistance.
