Mitchell College was established on September 14, 1938, as the New London Junior College. In 1950, the school was given its current name in honor of its benefactor, Alfred Mitchell. The campus of this private, liberal arts college is spread across 68 acres of land in New London, Connecticut.

Mitchell College awards Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees. A number of certificate programs are also available. Courses are offered in business administration, communication, criminal justice, early childhood studies, liberal and professional studies, and sport and fitness management, among others.

The athletics department of Mitchell College fields teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, lacrosse, softball, sailing, soccer, and volleyball. The teams are nicknamed the Mariners, and they compete in the New England Collegiate Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
