New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, also known as NMT or New Mexico Tech, is a technical institute situated in Socorro, N.M. NMT was originally established as the New Mexico School of Mines in 1889. It has expanded to become an exceptional research university, specializing in areas of engineering, science, and related fields. New Mexico Tech is a world leader in many areas of study including research, including atmospheric physics, hydrology, astrophysics, geophysics, homeland security, energetic materials engineering, and petroleum recovery.
New Mexico Tech boasts an active student life. The athletics department of the college supports many sports teams which participate in intercollegiate sports. The campus hosts many student clubs and organizations including Automotive Racing club, Ballroom Dance Club, and New Mexico Tech Lan Gaming Club.
New Mexico Tech is in Socorro, NM. Socorro is a self-contained town. The school is a public institution. New Mexico Tech issues awards (degrees) up to the level of Doctoral degree.
