New York University is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian research university established in 1831. The university offers enrollment to over 40,000 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. It has 16 schools and colleges under it in different centers across Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. The university also offers study abroad facilities in various places across the globe. Students at NYU can choose from a wide variety of degree and certificate programs in the streams of arts, science, business, fine arts, medicine, nursing, and law.
New York University’s sports teams are known as the Violets. The team colors are "NYU Violet" and white. Sports played at the NCAA level include basketball, cross country, and swimming.
The main campus of NYU is in New York, NY (a large city). The school is a private, not-for-profit school. NYU offers degrees up to the Doctoral degree.
The school offers more choices of majors than most colleges its size. NYU students most commonly major in a field related to drama and performing arts, real estate and construction management, and liberal arts.
The school does not accept everyone who applies. In 2007-2008, 32% of people who applied to NYU were accepted. In 2007-2008, SAT verbal scores of half of students were 620 to 720. Three-fourths of students accepted in 2007-2008 had SAT math scores of 630 or more.
NYU offers tenure to reward and retain some professors. Salaries for full-time faculty at the school are higher than most, allowing the school to afford quality teaching.
In 2007-2008, NYU had 41,783 enrolled students.
The school makes available a lot of student housing. Student athletes at NYU belong to the University Athletic Association for major sports.
The school reports its educational mission is:
"New York University's mission is to be an international center of scholarship, teaching and research defined by a culture of academic excellence and innovation. That mission involves retaining and attracting outstanding faculty, encouraging them to create programs that draw the best students, having students learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields, and shaping an intellectually rich environment for faculty and students both inside and outside the classroom. In reaching for excellence, NYU seeks to take academic and cultural advantage of its location in New York City and to embrace diversity among faculty, staff and students to ensure the widest possible range of perspectives, including international perspectives, in the educational experience."
