Newberry is supported by the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and is designed to impart education to students in a Christian environment. From 2006 to 2007, Newberry College celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Notable alumni of the institute include Lee Atwater, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Mark Hammond, South Carolina Secretary of State.
