Nicholls State University was founded in the year 1948 as a public university. It is built on a sprawling 210-acre campus and offers enrollment to over 6,000 graduates and postgraduates. At this university, one can choose to pursue bachelors degree, associate degree, or graduate degree programs in arts, accounting, agriculture, science, business administration, general education, healthcare, engineering and technology, nursing and music, among others. There are also several certificate courses and non-degree programs on offer.
Nicholls State University's athletics teams are nicknamed the Colonels, and they wear the team colors of red and gray. The university sponsors men's intercollegiate basketball, baseball, football, tennis and golf teams, along with women's intercollegiate basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, golf, volleyball, and track teams. There is also a separate women’s cheerleading team.
