Overview of Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology
Ohio Institute of Photography opened its doors in 1971 as a training center for careers in photography. Twenty years later, the school changed its name to its current name, concurrent with its addition of technical programs in allied health. Now the Dayton-based school is owned by Kaplan Higher Education, a family of career-oriented institutions located throughout the U.S.
Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT) based in Arlington, VA, is the organization which has accredited the Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology for granting degrees. The school’s medical assisting program has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

In addition to career programs in photography, the school offers health care, criminal justice and graphic design – all fields with substantial job potential. Graduates receive either a Diploma, Associate of Applied Business or an Associate of Applied Science, depending area of study selected.
Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology Admissions and Financial Aid
The admissions process is open and straightforward. Applicants need to provide evidence of high school completion or the equivalent. In a very limited number of programs (just one at the time this article was written), adequate performance on a particular competency test may be sufficient.
Credits earned at other qualifying post-secondary institutions may be accepted by Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology.
Many students receive financial assistance from federal and state/local grants. Students must display sufficient need to qualify. The school’s Financial Aid Office helps students navigate the process.

The school employs instructors dedicated to the providing high quality, hands-on education to their students. An academic advisor is assigned to each enrolled student help ensure progress toward graduation.

The school’s relatively small size – less than 1000 enrolled students in the Fall or ’05 – may be a plus for many prospective students. Men make up about one quarter of the school’s enrollment, although this proportion can fluctuate. The student body is also about 25% African-American.

There are no dorms at the school – all enrollees commute. Many attending the school also juggle jobs to help finance their education.
