Overview of Pennsylvania Culinary Institute

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute was established in the mid-eighties, originally as a branch of the Sawyer School. In 2002, the school entered into an association with Le Cordon Bleu Paris, the famous cooking school that has graduated the likes of Julia Child and other renowned chefs, bringing the classical European chef program to the Pittsburgh-based cooking school. As a result of this affiliation, Pennsylvania Culinary Institute is one of a select number of cooking schools in the U.S. that offer the respected Le Cordon Bleu programs. The school is now a part of the Career Education Corporation, a network of dozens of career-oriented schools across the U.S. and abroad.

Areas of Study

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute’s programs meld classical and modern techniques, European and American traditions, and practical and theoretical education. The school awards either a specialized associate’s degree along with Le Cordon Bleu Diplôme or a diploma, depending on the specific course being pursued.

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute Admissions and Financial Aid

The first step in the admission process is to contact the school and set up an interview. The school is looking for motivated applicants with a love for the culinary arts. If the applicant succeeds in the interview step, he or she then begins the written application process. SATs or ACTs are not required for admission. Foreign students may be required to show English language competency.

Tuition planners are available to help students find ways to pay for the program’s costs. Financial assistance may be available from U.S. and state government sources, for those who qualify for such programs. Other forms of aid may also be possible.

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute Faculty Quality

The school hires experienced cooking instructors who not only have the requisite chef skills but are also trained at art of teaching. The faculty is also provided with the right tools to help do their job properly, including industry-current lab facilities and a food industry research library.

Pennsylvania Culinary Institute Student Life

Over 1500 students attended the school during 2006. The school is one of the few culinary arts institutions that does offer student housing.
