It operates under the authority of the Tennessee Board of Regents. Roane State is mainly designed for students who aim to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Aside from transfer programs, Roane State also offers career preparation programs leading to associate degrees or certificates.

Roane State’s athletic department fields both men’s and women’s sports teams. They compete in sports like baseball, basketball, and softball in the Eastern Division of the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association. RSCC's official mascot is the Raider.
