Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is a private, comprehensive, coeducational university located in Winona, Minnesota. It was founded in 1912 as Saint Mary's College by Bishop Patrick R. Heffron. The university offers a wide variety of graduate and professional programs in diverse areas of study. The university enrolls more than 5,000 students annually.

SMU's athletic department fields both men's and women's athletic teams. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Cardinals and compete as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Cardinal is the students run newspaper of the university.
