San Francisco State University, also referred to as San Francisco State, SF State or SFSU, is a public university located in San Francisco, California. Established in 1899, SF State is a part of the California State University system. U.S. News & World Report (2000) ranked the university first in its reputation among its "Western University peers".
San Francisco State University offers more than 115 bachelor’s degrees, over 95 master’s degrees, over 25 credential programs and more than 30 certificate programs. The university is organized into eight academic divisions.
San Francisco State University’s athletic teams are nicknamed the Gators. They compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in Division II of the NCAA.

Students at the school often study drama and performing arts and liberal arts.
The admissions department at San Francisco State does not accept all those who apply. Most students' verbal SAT scores were in the range of 440 to 560 in 2007. A quarter of students admitted in 2007 scored 560 or higher on the math SAT.
