San Jose State University, or SJSU, is the founding campus of what later became the California State University system. It was originally established as the California State Normal School by the California Legislature on May 2, 1862 and is the oldest public university in California. SJSU offers more than 60 bachelors degrees with over 80 concentrations, and more than 60 master’s degrees with over 25 concentrations. The university is organized into seven colleges and six schools, which are:
San Jose State University’s sports teams are nicknamed the Spartans.

The school is known for its programs in engineering, art studies, and computer science and engineering.
Admission at San Jose State is selective, not open to all who apply. Three quarters of students in 2007-2008 had SAT verbal scores of at least 430. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 450 and 580.
San Jose State has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at the school is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.
