Southern Illinois University Carbondale, or SIU, is located in Carbondale, Illinois. It was founded in the year 1869. Carbondale campus is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system. The university offers a full range of degree programs, from bachelor to doctoral level, as well as professional degrees in law and medicine. SIU has more than 170 academic degree programs in diverse areas of study such as business, law, and medicine.

SIU was the first major university in the United States to be made handicap accessible in the early 1960s. It has the top ranked Automotive Technology program in the nation, and the university's Aviation program is among the top three in the nation.

The sports teams of the university are nicknamed the Southern Illinois Salukis.
