It was originally founded in 1899 as the John Tarleton Agricultural College and became a member of The Texas A&M University System in 1917. Tarleton State University became a four-year degree institution with the first class graduating in 1963. It offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. The university is organized into the following academic divisions:
