Tips for Selecting a College

  1. Colleges have various forms and sources of accreditation, from national to regional. Ask the school about its accreditation and standards.
  2. Published tuition and fees can be offset in some cases by student loans, other forms of student financial aid, or even scholarships. Check with each school for details.
  3. Not all schools offer student campus housing, of course. Don't make any assumptions.
  4. More and more schools offer online courses and even online degrees. Online programs vary greatly, so ask about the details.
  5. Check with each school how easy it is to transfer credits to or from the school.
  6. Nationally, certain programs of study are considered particularly "hot", such as nursing, ultrasound technician, computer programming, dental hygienists, medical assistants, school teachers, and more. See our career roundup for more info. Obviously, not all schools offer all courses of study.
  7. A good source of info about a school is web comments on student experiences, sometimes including reviews, complaints, and even lawsuits.
  8. Some colleges have student web sites or portals, where students can log in to get basic information.
  9. For the latest in entrance requirements, schedules, and current applications, you really should ask the school directly.
