Overview of Texas Careers
Originally called Modencare, Inc, Texas Careers started in San Antonio in 1989 to prepare men and women for health care careers. The school has since expanded its training programs and added three more campuses around Texas. Texas Careers is one of a group of career schools owned by Kaplan Higher Education, a division of Kaplan, Inc.
Points of Distinction
Areas of Study
Many students come to Texas Careers to obtain job skills in the health care area, where various programs are available at all locations. Some locations also have training programs in other disciplines such as business, computers, legal, and trades.
Texas Careers Admissions and Financial Aid
Admission to the school is a relatively simple, non-competitive process. The most significant academic requirement is a high school diploma or its equivalent. However, applicants who are past the compulsory age for required school attendance who do not possess a high school diploma may still gain entrance if they can pass a competency test.
Of course, students must meet tuition requirements to be able to attend. However, there may be help for many: Texas Careers is approved by the U.S. Department of Education for qualified students to receive Federal grants, loans and work/study funds. Other sources of tuition help may be available.
Texas Careers Faculty Quality
The school employs instructors who generally have years of hands-on, relevant workplace experience to provide the practical brand of training consistent with the school’s mission.
Texas Careers Student Body
Each campus has its own particular demographics, however all have between 300 and 500 students, based on a 2005 government report. Except for the Beaumont campus, the primary ethnic/racial group is Hispanic. Consistent across all locations is the gender make-up: Women comprise a substantial majority at each campus.
Texas Careers Student Life
The classrooms and the labs are where students get to know one another. The school is designed for local residents interested in advancing their careers. Many students work and/or have family responsibilities when not attending classes.
