The University of Virginia's College at Wise, commonly referred to as UVA Wise, was established in 1954. It was then known as the Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. The institute was given its current name in the year 1999. This public liberal arts college has a sprawling 400-acre campus in Wise, Virginia. The U.S. News and World Report of 1999 placed the college at the 2nd position among the liberal arts institutes in the South.
The University of Virginia's College at Wise offers more than 30 majors and over 20 minors. A large number of teaching specialties are also available. Students can choose from courses in the fields of business and economics, communication studies, education, history and philosophy, language and literature, natural sciences, nursing, mathematics and computer science, social sciences, and visual and performing arts.
The athletics department of UVA Wise fields teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The teams are known as the Highland Cavaliers. They compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
