The United States Merchant Marine Academy was founded as the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps in 1938. The academy was formally founded in 1942, and is one of five United States service academies. USMMA currently operates on an 82-acre campus in Kings Point, New York.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy offers programs in the fields of marine transportation, maritime operations and technology, logistics and intermodal transportation, marine engineering, shipyard management, and marine engineering systems.

USMMA’s varsity athletic program fields teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, crew, lacrosse, golf, football, sailing, soccer, tennis, pistol, rifle, swimming and diving, water polo, wrestling, track and field, volleyball, and softball. Students can also participate in on-campus clubs and organizations like the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, and the Marine Technology Society.
