University of Houston, also referred to as "U of H" or UH, is a public co-educational research university located in Houston, Texas. The school was established in 1927. It offers admission to over 30,000 students each year. The university offers majors in business and management, liberal arts, law, science, mathematics, computer science and engineering, design, and fine arts. The university also offers online distance education courses.

The university sports teams are nicknamed the Cougars. The mascot of the team is Shasta the Cougar. The university has men's and women's teams for sports such as track and field, football, basketball, and baseball.

Eminent alumni of the university include track and field legend Carl Lewis and, creator of the MPAA film rating system, Jack Valenti. Notable faculties include three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Albee and 1997 Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams.
