The University of Kansas, also referred to as KU, is a public research university. This main campus is located in Lawrence, Kansas, atop Mount Oread. The institution, established in 1865, currently offers admission to over 25,000 students every year. The university is well known for its various degree programs in liberal arts, science and engineering.

The sports teams of the University of Kansas are known as the Jayhawks. The athletics department offers nationally recognized sports programs in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.

The University of Kansas has produced many notable personalities. The first female US Senator, Nancy Landon Kassebaum, was an alumnus of this institution. George L. Brown, the first African-American Lieutenant Governor in the United States, also attended this university.
