The university name is abbreviated as UMM, and is one of the campuses in the University of Maine System. The university was established in 1909 and was earlier known as Washington State Normal School. UMM spreads across a 42-acre campus. The university offers associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in a wide variety of subjects including art, anthropology, biology, business, education, marine biology, pre-health professions, and theater.

The University of Maine participates in several varsity sports including soccer, cross country, and basketball. The university athletics teams are nicknamed as Clippers. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Sunrise Athletic Conference. The students are members of Greek fraternities and sororities such as Alpha Phi Omega, Kappa Mu Alpha, Sigma Chi Lambda, Kappa Alpha Kappa, and Phi Tau Phi.
