The University of Massachusetts Amherst, also known as UMass Amherst, is a public, coeducational, land-grant, research university. It is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States. It was established in the year 1863. The school currently grants admission to over 15,000 students annually. It is well known for its courses in the fields of science, media, landscaping and horticulture, and liberal arts.
University of Massachusetts Amherst’s sports teams are called the Minutemen (Men's teams) and the Minutewomen (Women's teams). “Sam the Minuteman” is the official mascot of the university. Various sports programs are offered to the students in football, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and baseball. There are also two major gymnasiums and squash courts on the campus.

The most common majors at the school are in science, media, mathematics, hospitality, landscaping and horticulture, liberal arts, and conservation and resource management.
University Of Massachusetts does not have an open admissions system. Not everyone who applies is accepted. Only 25% of students scored 510 or lower in 2007 on the verbal SAT test. Math SAT scores at the school centered around 520 to 630, but ranged both higher and lower.
