The University of Rhode Island, also known as URI, is the principal public research university located in the State of Rhode Island. It was founded in 1892. The main campus is situated in Kingston, Rhode Island. In 2008, U.S. News and World Report ranked URI in its list of best colleges and gave it a selective rating. The university is organized into the following academic divisions:
URI’s official mascot is named Rhody the Ram. Their sports teams are nicknamed the Rams.
URI is found in Kingston, RI. Kingston is a large suburb. The school is a public institution. Students can earn degrees up to and including the Doctoral degree at URI.
The school is known for its programs in media, conservation and resource management, and construction trades.
Admission to URI is not automatic; not everyone who applies gets in. Three quarters of students in 2007-2008 had SAT verbal scores of at least 470. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 480 and 580.
URI has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at the school is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.
Students numbered 15,650 in 2007-2008 at URI.
The school offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges. URI values student athletics, and belongs to the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The school reports its educational mission is:
"The University of Rhode Island is the StateÆs public learner-centered research university. We are a community joined in a common quest for knowledge. The University is committed to enriching the lives of its students through its land, sea, and urban grant traditions. URI is the only public institution in Rhode Island offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the distinctive educational opportunities of a major research university. Our undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, research, and outreach serve Rhode Island and beyond. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are united in one common purpose: to learn and lead together. Embracing Rhode Island Æs heritage of independent thought, we value:
* Creativity and Scholarship
* Diversity, Fairness, and Respect
* Engaged Learning and Civic Involvement
* Intellectual and Ethical Leadership"
