The university has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation as "Doctoral/Research Extensive". It was established in the year 1872. University of Toledo offers more than 250 academic programs in diverse areas of study. UT is organized into more than 8 academic divisions.

The university’s athletic teams are nicknamed the Rockets. The teams participate in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets football team has won more than 8 Mid-American Conference Championships. Some of the notable alumni of the university are Bob Dempsey, NASA Flight Director; Christi Paul, CNN Headline News anchor; and Philip Baker Hall, American actor.
