Founded in 1861, the University of Washington, or UW, is a public research university in Seattle, Washington, United States. It is the largest university in the northwestern United States and the oldest public university on the west coast. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2008, UW was placed 16th among the world's top universities. The university offers various degrees and programs through the following academic divisions:
