Valley City State University was established as a territorial normal school in 1889. It is a part of the North Dakota University System, and is located in Valley City, North Dakota. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked VCSU 2nd on its list of the Midwest's Top Public Baccalaureate Colleges.

Valley City State University offers more than 80 programs leading to bachelor's degrees in arts, science, and education. Courses are available in the fields of business, communication arts, teacher education, art, wildlife science, and music, among others. The university also offers a Master of Education degree through online learning programs. The academic divisions of VCSU are:
