West Texas A&M University, also known as WTAMU, is a public university located in Canyon, Texas, a small city south of Amarillo. It was established on September 20, 1910. WTAMU is part of the Texas A&M University System. The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. It is organized into more than six schools and colleges.
West Texas A&M University's athletic teams participate in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. Their sports teams are known as the Buffaloes, simply referred to as the "Buffs". Some of the notable alumni are Jesse Cross, US Army general; Anita Thigpen Perry, First Lady of Texas; and Duane Thomas, NFL American football player.
