Overview of Western International University
Western International University (also known as WIU) was founded as a non-profit school in Phoenix, AZ in 1978. The school is now for-profit and owned by the Apollo Group, one of the leading educational corporations in the U.S. and the owner of University of Phoenix, one of the nation’s largest universities.
The school draws students, such as adults already in the workforce, who are interested in flexible class schedules and programs that have direct applicability to their careers in business, information systems, justice and other areas.
WIU has grown to five campuses in Arizona – four in the greater Phoenix area and one in Fort Huachuca. The word “International” in the school’s name bears meaning: The school also operates campuses overseas in India and China. In addition, Western International University offers WIU Interactive Online for those who wish to pursue a degree via the Internet.

The school offers a wide range of degree and certificate programs in Business, Information Technology (IT), Justice, Behavioral Science, Human Resources, and Accounting. There are several MBA program options.
WIU Admissions and Financial Aid
Prerequisites for admission to undergraduate degree programs include graduation from an accredited or state-licensed high school (or a GED equivalent). A high school transcript must be provided and applicants must meet certain minimum GPA requirements. The SAT or ACT is not required.
Students applying for graduate programs must show evidence of completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. WIU requires a certain minimum college grade point average for admission to its master’s programs.
Financial assistance may be available in the form of loans and scholarships for students who qualify.
WIU Faculty Quality
Faculty members are generally expected to have substantial experience and a proven track record in their chosen fields and possess a Master’s degree. Instructors at the graduate level are often holders of a doctorate.
WIU Student Body
WIU is a large school with thousands of enrolled students. According to data gathered in 2005, over 70% of the school’s population is female and about a quarter are known to be either African-American or Hispanic.
WIU Student Life
Western International University is set up as a commuter’s school with multiple campuses around the Phoenix area and flexible schedule programs. The school does not offer dormitories. An alumni organization assists graduates in staying connected with one another.
