Founded as The Colorado State Normal School for Children, it was given the name Western State College in 1923. Western State College's sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II. Nicknamed the Mountaineers, the teams participate in soccer, baseball, rugby, adventure racing, ice hockey, mountain bike and road cycling. Clubs and associations available to the students include the Native American Student Council, the Latter Day Saints Association, Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Alpha Theta, and the Asian Pacific Islander Club. 91.1 KWSB is the campus radio.
