Western State College of Colorado, established in 1901, is located in Gunnison, Colorado. Founded as The Colorado State Normal School for Children, it was given the name Western State College in 1923. The college offers a variety of degrees and programs in areas such as sociology, geology, business administration, environmental studies, and mathematics.

Western State College's sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II. Nicknamed the Mountaineers, the teams participate in soccer, baseball, rugby, adventure racing, ice hockey, mountain bike and road cycling. Clubs and associations available to the students include the Native American Student Council, the Latter Day Saints Association, Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Alpha Theta, and the Asian Pacific Islander Club. 91.1 KWSB is the campus radio.
