Job Title: Business Owner
Type of Company: I own a packaging and shipping company located in north central Massachusetts.
Education: AS, Bay State Junior College (Boston, MA)
Previous Experience: I worked for an engineering firm as a sales coordinator and technical writer.
Job Tasks: I am the owner of a small packaging and shipping company that has been in business for over 17 years. Our main function is to ship packages using UPS, Fed Ex, The United States Postal Service and DHL. We use computers to figure out which carrier would be the best to ship a package. We also have over 50 different sizes of boxes so we can pack your items to ship also. We use peanuts, bubble wrap and other products to safely pack items.
We also have a person on duty who is a Notary Public. We have mailboxes so people can receive mail and packages at our locations. We sell greeting cards, wrapping paper and office supplies, and we have copiers and a fax machine, we do laminating, key cutting and a whole lot more services.
You have to be able to work well with the public in my job and be able to work a computer. You also have to be able to lift up to 70 pounds with ease.
Our busiest time of year is around Christmas. That seems to be when people ship the most to their family and friends. We also see more shipping around the other holidays also.
We try to make it as easy as possible for our customers when they come in. We will fill out any forms they need filled out and our computers hold their information so they do not need to put names on their packages. It is very import to have good customer relation skills. We do have to charge a little more than the post office for stamps so you want people to feel they are getting something for the surcharge. We have many customers who have been coming to us for years because of that reason.
I am also responsible for ordering all the supplies we need, which means I have to be organized and frugal at the same time.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job, since I am a part owner, is having the option of setting my own hours so I can work while my children are in school. I also enjoy getting to speak with so many new people everyday. Sometimes you can end up becoming friends with your customers.
The worst part of my job is pretty much the same as the best....the public. Sometimes you have to deal with people who argue about price or are just plain rude: talking on their cell phone or thinking they know how to do my job better than I would. It can also be a challenge to keep the business profitable in these hard times. We have to try to keep our inventory low so we can meet overhead, but still have what we need in stock.
Job Tips: If you are going to own your own packaging and shipping store be prepared to work many hours. The wear and tear on your body can be tough.
It is so very important to be respectful and pleasant to the customers. Smile and greet everyone in a friendly and welcoming way.
Make sure to pack everything as well as possible so nothing will be damaged when it's shipped.
Additional Thoughts: It is great to own your own business. It is hard work, but so worth it in the end.
