Job Title: Owner Of Small Business
Type of Company: I get houses ready for resale.
Education: Pace University BA in Liberal Arts, NYU - MSW
Previous Experience: I worked in early intervention in the Bronx for three years. Started a business called Maplewood Family Resource Center running groups for new moms and babies and parenting groups, then I started my current business, a home staging company called Sweet Life by Design. Been doing that for three years
Job Tasks: I get houses ready for resale. When someone is ready to sell their house I come in and go through the house room by room. I take notes and pictures and talk with the homeowner about what they are thinking about doing in their house (painting, redoing floors, etc.). Then I go to my office and write a very detailed report about what can be done to make their house as attractive as possible to a prospective buyer.
Homeowners then hire me to stage their house which can take anywhere from one to five days including shopping or renting furniture and accessories for the house. Usually the items stay in the house for 90 days and then I pick them up. Most houses that are staged sell quickly. Even in a bad housing market, staged houses usually sell quickly.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of the job is helping to get a house sold. It is difficult because I can sometimes get caught in between a realtor and the homeowner. I use my social work skills a lot when I am staging a house because it is a very stressful time. Especially stressful if the homeowner has lived in that house for a long time, or if someone is getting divorced or has died.
1. Spend time talking with someone who has done the job before.
2. Trust yourself, if this is something you think you might like to do or would be good at, try it at your friends house, or in your own house and take it from there.
3. Have fun and be creative! It's a great way to do what you like and help people, too!
