Job Title: Sales Representative
Type of Company: An electrical and plumbing wholesaler.
Education: BA, Political Science, Purdue University
Previous Experience: Over a period of eleven and a half years I held several positions with an electrical supply company. I also worked as the store manager for 3-1/2 years at City Electric Supply.
Job Tasks: I have several responsibilities, the first of which is assisting with counter sales, waiting on the customers that come into our store. The next one is going out into the field to cultivate relationships with electricians who are potential customers of our company. The third one is maintaining and updating the inventory of electrical goods by finding and ordering electrical items and merchandising the stock in an attractive manner. The final one is providing electrical material quotes by examining plans and researching, comparing and recommending potential material for our customers to bid on potential jobs.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my work is being able to solve a customer's problem either by getting him the material he needs or suggesting a way to accomplish the task at hand, while the worst part is not being able to locate the material that my customer needs.
1. First, you must be a personable, honest and trustworthy person whom your customers can trust to help them solve their problems.
2. Timeliness is a must. "To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to miss the bus."
3. The customer is always right. That is the first law of retail or service occupations.
Additional Thoughts: Expect the unexpected, be flexible and don't be afraid to work hard. Be willing to find and offer merchandise and services that your competitors do not offer.
