Senior Sales Rep For A Software Company

Job Title: Senior Account Sales Representative

Type of Company: I work for the world's leading distributor of open source software.

Education: some college, attended Empire State College for one semester

Previous Experience: I worked as a major account manager for Symantec and Veritas. I also worked as a senior account manager for Unified Technologies and aught electronic theory in the military.

Job Tasks: I sell open source software subscriptions and services to state and local governments in an eight-state area. I am responsible for all revenue generation and service delivery throughout my area of responsibility. I travel throughout the territory and call on customers at the senior executive level. A typical sale can run from tens of thousands to millions of dollars. I have a team of associates who support my activities in a variety of ways, including administrative support, technical subject matter expertise, marketing, sales and sales support.

Projects include Web 2.0 application implementations, service-oriented architecture infrastructure projects, identity and access management projects, high performance computing and grip computing platforms. Software as a service and cloud computing are all areas that my business is involved in on a daily basis. It is an exciting and interesting place to work as we are changing the way the world does IT and that is fun to do.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is the fact that I am handsomely rewarded for doing a good job and have near total autonomy over my day-to-day operations. I get to work from home, make nearly all of the decisions that affect my results and have a loyal team who are eager to deliver on any project.

The worst part of the job is the travel. Despite being able to stay in good hotels and eat in fine restaurants,I have to be on the road more than 50% of the time, and that's wearing. I would love to find a way to reduce the travel without reducing production.

Job Tips:
1. Always check your performance against a measure you know is difficult to achieve.

2. Above all else, be determined and persistent in your daily activities.

3. Be aware that the freedom that comes with an outside sales job has a corresponding cost if you're not highly disciplined.
