CityTownInfo has compiled a list of searchable mortgage lender databases in just about every state in the U.S. Most of these links lead to a form where you can enter the lender's name and receive information about the lender and its license to operate in the state. A small number of states require downloading the full list of lenders and manually searching the list for the desired lender.
In states where there is no lookup service, you may consider contacting the state's banking department (the department that usually regulates mortgage companies) by telephone.
