Though often overlooked, surgical technologists play an incredibly important role on the surgical team. These individuals are the ones who ensure the operating room and tools are organized and sterile, and that patients are prepped and ready for surgery or other medical procedures. After a procedure is complete, surgical technologists stay back to clean up, sterilize, and reorganize the equipment that has been used.

Alabama Surgical Technologist Schools

Alabama offers a variety of educational programs for those looking to become surgical technologists. Depending on your needs and educational goals, you should be able to find a program that works for you at one of the many colleges and institutions throughout Alabama. Here are some surgical tech schools in Alabama to consider.

  • Bevill State Community College: For those looking to get moving quickly on their career path as a surgical technologist, Bevill State Community College offers a short-term certificate program. This program includes 29 hours of coursework, and requires students to complete 120 clinical cases throughout their course of study.

  • Calhoun Community College: Calhoun Community College offers two pathways toward a career as a surgical technologist. Students might choose to undertake a four-semester certification program, comprised of 44 hours of coursework and clinical experience. Or, they could earn an Associate of Applied Science through five semesters (62 credit hours). Both pathways culminate in students being prepared to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assistants exam.

  • Faulkner State Community College: At Faulkner State Community College, students can choose to earn either a certificate or a degree in surgical technology. The certification program lasts for two years, and the AAS program runs for three. The AAS degree is also in pre-surgical technology in addition to surgical technology.

  • Gadsen State Community College: Gadsen State Community College students will attend the school's surgical technologist program for either two or three semesters, depending on when they enrolled. The program begins with strictly classwork, and shifts toward clinical experience during the second and third semesters.

  • Huntsville Hospital: Huntsville's program is dedicated to students becoming highly effective in clinical settings. Though there is a classroom aspect to the program, the program focuses on the clinical aspect of surgical technology, requiring students to undertake 120 cases in a variety of areas, such as esophagoscopy and sinoscopy. In the past few years, Huntsville has boasted a 100% pass rate on the NBSTSA exam.

What to Expect from Alabama Surgical Technologist Programs

Expectations for surgical technology programs in Alabama vary depending on students goals and needs. However, prospective students should be prepared to gain a strong foundational background in higher education, a thorough understanding of the medical field as a whole, and intensive clinical experience throughout their course of study.

Upon completion of their chosen program, students will not only be prepared for entry-level positions in the surgical technology field, but will also be prepared to sit for national board certification exams. These schools often measure their effectiveness based on their students' ability to:

  • Pass the certification exam
  • Find a job upon completion of the program

In other words, as a student you will have to earn the right to call yourself a graduate of these institutions through diligence and dedication.

Alabama Surgical Technologist Certification

Students who have graduated from or are close to completing certificate or degree programs in surgical technology are recommended to sit for the NBSTSA exam. Passing this exam allows a professional surgical technologist to practice anywhere in the United States. This national certification expires every four years, and is renewable through a number of channels.

In addition to being able to work in any of the 50 states, becoming nationally certified as a surgical technologist makes individuals more marketable than those who only hold a certificate of completion. The proof that you will go the extra mile can certainly help you find gainful employment upon graduation from an accredited program.
