Spanish Fort History
The city of Spanish Fort was formerly a French trading post. The Spanish constructed a fort at the location of present-day Spanish Fort in the year 1780. This fort was destroyed by the British in the year 1781, but the Spanish rebuilt it in 1799. The fort was possessed by the United States in 1814. Spanish Fort acted as a defense to Mobile city during the American Civil War. The city was the site of the Battle of Spanish Fort in the American Civil War Mobile Campaign.
