El Dorado History
El Dorado was founded in 1843. The city's first retail store was established by Matthew Rainey. He also named the city, which in Spanish means the 'Gilded Road.' During the 1850s, the city became home to several cotton plantations and farms. The first railroads arrived in the late 1800s. It was incorporated on May 5, 1870. Oil was discovered in the city in the 1920s and in 1937.
