Newport History
Newport was incorporated on October 16, 1875. It is the county seat of Jackson County, which was founded on November 5, 1829. It is located on White River and has deep agricultural ties. Newport is a rural community. The name 'Newport' was recorded first in an announcement of land sales in 1837. It is the hometown of Michael Dale Beebe, who became the Governor of Arkansas in 1992; Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart; and Mary Steenburgen, the Academy Award-winning actress.
