Middletown History
When the first European settlers arrived in this region it was occupied by the Mattabesek Indians. General Court drew the first plans for a colonial settlement here in 1646. It was incorporated as the Town of Mattabeseck in 1650, and renamed Middletown in 1653. The first European settlers in this area were Puritans, and they had frequent skirmishes with the Native Americans. However, during the 19th century, Middletown became a large and prosperous settlement.
