Winsted History
The town, formed at the confluence of the Mad River and Still River, witnessed its first settlement in 1756. The name Winsted is a combination of Winchester and Barkhansted. Winsted, which was one of the first mill towns in Connecticut, also serves as the business center for the towns of Winchester and Barkhamsted. Winsted and New Haven were centers for the production of mechanical clocks in 1900.
