Avon Park History

Avon Park is one of the oldest cities of Highlands County. The earliest settler was a Connecticut native named Oliver Martin Crosby. Crosby settled in this area in order to study the wildlife of Everglades. He was followed by many people, which led to the establishment of the town called "Lake Forest." Crosby later changed this name to Avon Park, when a woman who had also settled there convinced him that the area was similar to Stratford-upon-Avon.
