Winter Garden History
Winter Garden's first settler was W.C. Roper in 1857. He came searching for a home-site from Meriwether County in Georgia. Roper bought 600 acres of land and settled down with his family. He built a grist mill, a saw mill, a sugar mill and a tannery, where he made shoes. Roper’s family was followed by many more families, and helped develop the site into a full-fledged town.
