Located in Upson county, Thomaston, Georgia, is 40 miles W of Macon, Georgia (center to center) and 59 miles S of Atlanta, Georgia. The city has a population of 9,411 residents.
Thomaston History
Thomaston received official incorporation as a city in the year 1825. In the same year, it was also designated as Upson County's county seat. The area was named in honor of General Jett Thomas, an Indian fighter in the War of 1812. He also assisted in establishing the Franklin College in the year 1806, and the state capitol at Milledgeville in the year 1805-07. The city's first courthouse was completed in 1828, and the second courthouse in the year 1852. The economy of Thomaston in the 20th century was chiefly based on the production of textiles and tire cord. The Thomaston Mills was granted a charter in 1899.
