Makawao History

Since the early 19th century, the residents of Makawao have been herding cattle. The hunting industry was born when the number of cattle grew. In 1793, the first cattle was shipped by Captain George Vancouver. Apart from cattle ranching, the settlers of Makawao were also indulged in agriculture. The area is famous for being the center of the 'Up Country,' which is a portion of the island dominated by ranch land. It is located in Maui County, which was founded in the year 1905.
