Pukalani is in Maui County and is a census designated place. The word Pukalani means heavenly gates in the Hawaiian language. In 1905, Maui County was founded and it has a quasi - mayor - council system of government. It was the only US county to be won by Dennis Kucinich during his campaign for the nomination of the Democratic Party to the presidency in 2004.
