Downers Grove History
The area now known as Downers Grove was originally settled in 1932. Pierce Downer was the first settler in the area. In fact, the place was named after him. In 1844, the first school of this area was established. Some of the older homes of Downers Grove served as stops on the Underground Railroad. In 1862, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad first entered the village. The area was incorporated in March 1873. The headquarters of Rossi, Spiegel and Butterball, Lovejoy, Sara Lee, Travelers Insurance, ServiceMaster, Magnetrol, Swift-Eckrich, FTD, and Arrow Gear are also located in Downers Grove.
